Israel and Jordan Prepare for the 2,000th Anniversary of the Baptism: Could Academic Cooperation Reveal the Secrets of Kahlat and the Copper Scroll?

The year 2030 will mark 2,000 years since the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River—an event of immense religious, historical, and cultural significance for more than two billion believers worldwide. On both sides of the river, Israel and Jordan are advancing extensive preparations for the anticipated arrival of millions of pilgrims and visitors.

Alongside the tourism and economic dimensions, this renewed regional focus on the Lower Jordan basin creates a historic opportunity to promote cross-border academic and archaeological cooperation.

Preparations on the Israeli Side: Qasr al-Yahud

Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs views 2030 as a national project with exceptional tourism and diplomatic potential.

A dedicated task force: The foreign minister has established a special team headed by Israel’s special envoy to the Christian world, Ambassador George Deek, who is conducting a direct dialogue with church leaders worldwide.

Interministerial coordination: The project involves cooperation among the ministries of tourism, defense, transportation, and other government bodies to prepare for the safe reception and movement of large numbers of visitors.

Infrastructure development: Particular emphasis is being placed on improving access to Christian holy sites, safeguarding freedom of worship, and upgrading the area surrounding the Jordan River.
