European powers are quietly shoring up their security posture in response to renewed signals from the United States that Greenland is viewed less as an autonomous territory under international arrangements and more as a prize to be coveted, pressured for, and eventually claimed.

Such manoeuvring does not occur in a vacuum. It is the direct consequence of an erratic approach to global leadership that shows scant regard for international law, diplomatic norms, or democratic restraint.
