EDITORIAL: Reminder: Officials have an obligation to be transparent

Integrity is how you behave when you know you won’t get caught. It’s also how you behave when you believe there won’t be any consequences even if you do get caught.

That second one is more like the kind of integrity public officials will need when it comes to the state’s Freedom of Information Law (FOIL), which governs public access to government documents, and the state’s Open Meetings Law, which governs transparency in government meetings.

The start of the new year, when many local governments are seeing new faces, is a good time to remind our elected representatives of their obligation to serve in an open and transparent........
