Replacement of Nuclear Reactors: Aim to Achieve New Targets by Overcoming Challenges

The Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry has set specific numerical targets for rebuilding nuclear reactors for the first time since a major accident occurred at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant of Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc.
To meet growing demand for electricity in the age of artificial intelligence, it is necessary to steadily proceed with the work while ensuring safety.
According to proposed targets shown to an expert panel meeting, among reactors set to be decommissioned, two to five would be rebuilt by the 2040s, eventually reaching a total of 11 to 14 by the 2050s. A formal decision is expected to be made as early as this summer.
The government has set these new targets because Japan’s supply capacity for nuclear power is projected to be insufficient if the situation remains unchanged.
