MAGA worship: Politics and profit at America’s expense
Despite surrounding himself with an inner circle of right-wing religious blowhards, President Trump seems to practice a Christianity that no one but the MAGA faithful can recognize.
Faith adviser Mark Burns blessed a giant golden statue in his image earlier this month. Robert Morris, a spiritual adviser to Trump during his first term, just finished a six-month prison sentence for child sexual abuse. Trump’s faith doesn’t appear to run deeper than the self-glorification he can extract from the right’s most notorious religious hucksters.
Sunday brought yet another religious head-scratcher. Eric Metaxas, the author of several Trump-themed children’s books — yes, really — shocked attendees at the president’s national prayer event by declaring that God personally wanted American taxpayers to fund Trump’s White House ballroom. The Lord, it seems, has a pretty specific interest in Beltway architecture.
“Yes, it’s hard to believe that it would take two centuries for the Lord to raise up a great man to bring that ballroom finally to stand where it needs to stand,” Metaxas said. “It’s extraordinary, we only had to wait 200 years.”
It may seem odd for most mainstream Christians to hear that God is personally validating all of Trump’s most controversial policies and construction projects, but it makes perfect sense to the Christian-in-name-only grifters who have turned Trump-worship into a profitable industry.
Just ask Hank Kunneman, the pastor who turned Omaha’s Lord of Hosts Church into one of the nation’s biggest temples to Trumpism.........
