Trump to other nations: ‘Go get your own oil’ from Strait of Hormuz

President Trump on Tuesday lashed out at allies over their reluctance to help secure Iran’s Strait of Hormuz, telling them to either buy U.S. oil or get it themselves from the critical waterway. 

“All of those countries that can’t get jet fuel because of the Strait of Hormuz, like the United Kingdom, which refused to get involved in the decapitation of Iran, I have a suggestion for you: Number 1, buy from the U.S., we have plenty, and Number 2, build up some delayed courage, go to the Strait, and just TAKE IT,” Trump wrote in a TruthSocial post. 

“You’ll have to start learning how to fight for yourself, the U.S.A. won’t be there to help you anymore, just like you weren’t there for us,” he continued. 

The comments come after the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump told aides that he would be willing to end the U.S. military operation in the country even if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed. 

The effective closure of the strait since the start of the war has sent oil and gasoline prices soaring. The channel, located near Iran, is a key shipping lane through which about 20 percent of the world’s oil usually travels.

Trump has repeatedly sent contradictory signs about the war, one moment signaling a renewed effort at negotiations, while at another threatening new attacks on Iran’s infrastructure. The U.S. has fortified its forces in the Middle East with additional troops, which has raised the possibility of ground action, such as at attack on Kharg Island, a critical oil depot for Tehran.

The president in the Truth Social post went on to call out France in a subsequent post on the platform, calling the longtime U.S. partner “unhelpful.” 

“The Country of France wouldn’t let planes headed to Israel, loaded up with military supplies, fly over French territory. France has been VERY UNHELPFUL with respect to the “Butcher of Iran,” who has been successfully eliminated! The U.S.A. will REMEMBER!!!” Trump said.
