Treasury Department to add Trump’s signature to US currency

The Treasury Department announced on Thursday that it will add President Trump’s signature to paper currency to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the U.S., marking the first time a sitting president’s signature will appear on currency.

“There is no more powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of our great country and President Donald J. Trump than U.S dollar bills bearing his name, and it is only appropriate that this historic currency be issued at the Semiquincentennial,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement.

The announcement comes after the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) approved a $1 gold coin last week that featured Trump’s likeness in honor of the country’s 250th anniversary.

“Under President Trump’s leadership, we are on a path toward unprecedented economic growth, lasting dollar dominance, and fiscal strength and stability,” said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. “There is no more powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of our great country and President Donald J. Trump than U.S dollar bills bearing his name, and it is only appropriate that this historic currency be issued at the Semiquincentennial.”

Federal law has not allowed living people in the past from being depicted on U.S. currency. However, a law signed by Trump at the end of his first administration known as the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 included new language regarding the semiquincentennial commemoration coins.

Trump and his allies have moved to put his name on a number of buildings during his second term, including renaming the Institute of Peace to Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace, and the Kennedy Center to the Trump Kennedy Center.
