Indonesia-US Trade Agreement at Risk of Collapse, Report Claims
Indonesia’s trade agreement with the United States is could be about to collapse, U.S. officials said this week, claiming that Jakarta has dragged its feet on several commitments it made as part of the deal.
The U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer believes that Indonesia is “backtracking” on several commitments it made, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday, citing unnamed sources familiar with the negotiations between the two nations.
One person familiar with the talks told the FT that Indonesia “is not just slow rolling the implementation of this deal as trade negotiators have experienced with other trading partners, Indonesia is outright saying they cannot implement what they agreed to and need to renegotiate the initial commitments to be nonbinding.” The source added, “This is extremely problematic and is not being well-received from the United States. Indonesia may be at risk of losing its deal.”
