Where do lefties get their news?
Your average left-of-center boomer probably reads The New York Times (NYT), CNN, NPR. Your average social-media savvy left-of-left-of-center boomer is probably on Bluesky, essentially a leftist alternative to X.
Zack Beauchamp, senior correspondent at Vox, put together a graphic showing the 30 largest Bluesky accounts by followers. (RELATED: Left-Wing Journos’ New Anti-Twitter Playground Is Rife With Death Threats And Fake News)
“I think the average quality of account is higher — a lot of reliable news outlets — but the follower account is much smaller and the ideology almost entirely homogenous,” Beauchamp said, replying to a post showing the X accounts with the most engagement in 2026.
This is a version of the same graphic for BlueSky. The official Bluesky account has, by far, the most followers of any account on the app at around 32.6 million followers. Democratic New York Rep.
Far-left Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has about 2.2 million followers, lefty news host Rachel Maddow has about 1.13 million followers, former U.S. Secretary of Labor Robert Reich has about 794,000 followers, and lefty newsletter writer Heather Cox Richardson has about 759,000 followers. Mueller, She Wrote, (an account belonging to the owner of a podcast about “[t]hree women unraveling the mysteries of the Mueller investigation”) has about 730,000 followers. I would contest Beauchamp’s description of such accounts as higher quality. In any case, these results are pretty unsurprising. Bluesky is a loony bin for lefties who are too fragile to read things with which they disagree.
Note that Beauchamp’s graphic only measures followers, not engagement with posts. The NYT boasts 1.3 million followers on Bluesky. Their latest post (as of writing April 7) garnered four reposts, 16 quotes, and 28 likes. The post before that got two quotes and seven likes.
I’d be curious to see the most popular Bluesky accounts in terms of engagement. My speculation is that the list would be dominated by radical left-wing perspectives.
