Desperate to avoid failing an exam the next day, Nobita schemes to use a time machine to sneak into Dekisugi’s room of one week later and just copy the answers on his perfect-score test.

The above is from the manga series “Doraemon” by Fujiko F. Fujio.

Upon arrival in Dekisugi’s room as planned, Nobita encounters his “other self,” who chastises him: “You’re trying to score 100 by copying someone else’s answers? Stop being such a cheap sneak.”

But Nobita retorts: “My survival depends entirely on looking at Dekisugi’s answers.”

Nobita was torn between his inner angel and inner devil. I wonder if a teenager who took the entrance exams in February was also torn between them.

The teenager cheated on the exams for Tokyo’s Waseda University by using a pair of smart glasses as his secret weapon.

The spectacles were fitted with a camera and communication device. This enabled him to take photos of the test questions and transmit them to his "tutors" outside, who sent him the answers.

Police sent papers on the case to prosecutors on a charge of obstructing the tests.

He reportedly told police, “I came up with this ploy because I’d failed entrance tests for a national university. I feared I could also fail tests for other universities.”

From those words, I imagined someone who must have already spent some years trying in vain to get into a university. But I was wrong. He was a high school student when he cheated on those tests.

What could have driven him to this folly? Did he despair of having any future at all?

Back to Doraemon.

Nobita ultimately convinces himself that he can only do what he can, and Doraemon hands him a tool called a “Jimon,” which slows the flow of time in the way a floodgate regulates the flow of water.

Nobita pulls an all-nighter to study for the test and scores a 65. He weeps with joy, “I came this far, all on my own.”

Here’s what I want to tell the teenager who cheated: Please try to get hold of Volume 37 of Tentomushi Comics.

You won’t receive a secret tool, but you still have more than enough time to start over again.
