Careers in Sports: Expansion of women’s sports has positively influenced the sports job market

When an expansion team in a sports league is announced, the first thing people usually think of is the incoming players and coaches. There will be articles posted about which players teams should sign, what their jerseys may look like and predictions about what their record may be at the end of the first season.

One thing that typically gets overlooked is how many staff members each of those teams has to hire before, during and after their first season. Two recent examples are the Boston Legacy and Denver Summit within the National Women’s Soccer League.

Both teams will be kicking off their first season in 2026, and both have hired dozens of staff members in recent months. These roles not only give an opportunity for more people to work in the sports industry, it also gives women a chance to work in a league where the athletes on the field look like them.
