Guardians Of Sovereignty: Military Beyond Politics – OpEd

As we celebrate our Armed Forces Day symbolizing the day Bangladesh’s military was founded in the Liberation War of 1971, it is important to ponder and revolve around the essence of the military to defend the nation’s core values and sovereignty. The armed forces must always serve at the service of the nation and should be non-partisan entirely so as not to get diverted from their main role, doing anything politically.

On this historic display of unity of effort amongst member services of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, the official unification was declared on November 21, 1971, leading to operations against infiltrating enemy this was a decisive phase for independence. The legacy here reinforces the central nature of the military that is defensive of national sovereignty and territorial borders of the country.

The role of the military in politics in Bangladesh existed at some period but it created unwanted instability. Important Coup attempts in 1975, 1982, and again in 2007 interrupted to upholding democratic processes painting the perspective of a politically active military. Various interventions were launched........
