Even if Trump wins again, MAGA is going to implode
“I think we are going to have a very big victory today,” Donald Trump told reporters in Florida as he came off the campaign trail for the last time to wait for the election results at his Mar-a-Largo resort.
Trump was as bombastic as ever, predicting that once he is re-elected, “America will be bigger and better and safer and stronger than ever before”.
He was better behaved than usual, perhaps because he was making a rare joint appearance with his wife Melania – “I’m so proud, her book is number one bestseller,” he boasted on her behalf as she remained silent.
So far, so predictable.
As I write, while polls are still open in many Western states, this election is going to form and will be all down to the swing states. Still too close to call – and closer than either 2020 or 2016. The pollster Frank Luntz warned, “This isn’t going to take hours. It’s going to take days” until there is a clear winner.
Either way, in all likelihood, it will not be the smashing runaway victory Trump was predicting. In the final days of the campaign there have also been rays of wistfulness blazing out from the orange man.
