The Tory party is engulfed in disgrace

The latest betting scandal engulfing the Conservative party is a disgrace. It exposes once again that standards at Westminster are lower than those in other areas of intense competition such as, say, professional football.

“It” may or may not be coming home from the Euros. Another “it”- sleaze – is certainly cutting through in this general election. As an audience member on BBC Question Time stuck it to Rishi Sunak: “Aren’t these emerging allegations about betting on the election date the absolute epitome of the lack of ethics that we have had to tolerate from the Conservatives for years and years?”

Two Conservative candidates in this election, Craig Williams and Laura Saunders, and her husband Tony Lee, the Conservative Party’s director of campaigning, are under investigation by the Gambling Commission after an upsurge in bets on the timing of the election before to the Prime Minister made the announcement. Williams was Sunak’s parliamentary aide. A close protection officer has also been arrested and suspended by the Metropolitan Police. The inquiry is continuing with the possibility of other names emerging.

Dodgy betting........
