FILE - San Francisco Supervisor Dean Preston speaks to the crowd of Transit Funeral attendees and supporters of funding for public transit in front of City Hall in downtown San Francisco on June 3, 2023. Preston conceded defeat in his reelection bid on Sunday, following a release of more results from Tuesday’s general election.

San Francisco District 5 Supervisor Dean Preston, a self-described democratic socialist who has earned the ire of oligarchs and tech moguls, including Elon Musk, was unseated by challenger Bilal Mahmood in Tuesday’s general election.

Mahmood, a co-founder and former CEO of the software company ClearBrain, edged out Preston in the race’s final round of ranked-choice voting by a margin of about 5 percentage points, or 52.70% to 47.30%, according to unofficial election results from Tuesday’s general election. As of Monday, Mahmood had 13,083 votes to Preston’s 11,744.
