Reader survey: Do you support reopening the Great Highway in S.F. to car traffic?

Sunset Dunes park sits on a portion of the Great Highway in San Francisco that is now closed to car traffic.

Last year, San Francisco voters approved Proposition K, which closed a 2-mile portion of the Great Highway to car traffic for recreational space at Ocean Beach that is now Sunset Dunes park.

Prop K was passed by 55% of voters citywide, but in the Sunset District closest to the park, it was overwhelmingly rejected. Many in the neighborhood were concerned about traffic after the road closure and having such a big change imposed on them by the city.

The fate of the Great Highway has resurfaced with the possibility of another ballot measure to rescind Prop K and reopen the road to vehicle traffic.

Former Sunset Supervisor Joel Engardio, who was recalled for championing Prop K, has voted in the poll and commented: “San Francisco will only realize its full potential if we do bold and positive things like create Sunset Dunes and build the housing our kids and grandkids will need to stay here.”
