Lessons from Surah Yunus (Surah 10)

SURAH Yunus reminds us of the true purpose of life. Allah created the sun as a radiant source of light and the moon as a reflected light, and placed signs throughout the heavens and the earth for those who reflect and are mindful of Him.

Allah did not create this universe without purpose. Human beings have been placed on earth to recognize their Creator, live righteously, and prepare for the Hereafter.

One of the central messages of the surah is a warning against becoming absorbed in worldly life. Allah says that those who do not expect to meet Him, who are satisfied and content with the life of this world, and who are heedless of His signs, will face the consequences of their choices (10:7–8). Many people spend their lives pursuing wealth, status, houses, cars, and other worldly achievements. As worldly success increases, humility often decreases and arrogance takes its place. Yet everything in this world eventually ages, loses its attraction, and passes away.

Allah also draws attention to human nature during times of hardship. When people are afflicted by difficulty, they sincerely call upon Allah for help. Yet when relief comes, many return to their old ways as though they had never prayed to Him (10:12).........
