This tradition, born not in the ancient creeds but in the feverish prophetic speculations of 19th century Britain, has metastasized into one of the most destructive political forces of the modern era. Its roots lie not in the Gospels but in a hyper literal reading of Old Testament prophecy, filtered through the dispensationalist schemes of John Nelson Darby and popularized by the Scofield Reference Bible.
