Work to build padel courts at city sports facility gets under way
Bosses for the Nest sports facility near Norwich Airport are currently awaiting a decision over plans for a new indoor sports hall and gym, along with a clothes recycling centre and improved access and parking.
According to the proposals, the new sports hall will be feature eight badminton courts, a futsal pitch, basketball and netball courts and cricket nets.
It will also include a large storage area and a dividing wall to create two separate courts for multi-use activities.
In July last year, the Community Sports Foundation charity applied for planning permission to open three courts at its site in Horsford.
Then, in February this year, planners gave the application their seal of approval and construction for the courts began soon after.
Since March 9, the car park after the mini roundabout by the main entrance has not been accessible while construction is under way.
Additional parking is being made available near the main entrance of the site when needed.
Jackie Thornton, the Community Sports Foundation's director of strategy and development, said when the plans for the courts first emerged: "The expansion of padel courts at the Nest represents a bold investment in health, inclusion and opportunity.
"We are constantly evolving the Nest with the view to reduce isolation, support mental wellbeing, promote physical activity and offer a safe, inspiring space for people of all ages and backgrounds."
Once the courts are completed, the sports facility will join a number of other locations across the city with the fastest growing sport is on offer including Court de Padel on Whiffler Road, Pace Padel in Taverham and Padel Point in Blofield.
The Nest is the Norwich City Football Club Foundation’s flagship community site.
