New Delhi: A day after an automatic weather station in Nagpur recorded 56 degree Celsius, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the report was not correct and that the unusual high temperature was recorded due to failure of the electronic sensor.

“The report of 56 degrees Celsius temperature on May 30 is not correct and not declared officially,” Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) Nagpur said in a statement.

The RMC, Nagpur clarified that the nearby functioning Automatic Weather Station at Central Institute of Cotton Research, Nagpur had recorded a maximum temperature of 44 degrees Celsius on May 30. The weather office also said that automatic systems may sometimes report “erroneous readings” due to various reasons such as site conditions, damage of sensors or protection shields.

“On 30th May PDKV Ramdaspeth (Nagpur City IMD AWS) reported a maximum temperature of 54.4 degrees C and one more station in Nagpur reported 52.2 degrees C. These values are wrong due to failure of the electronic sensor (As confirmed by IMD, Pune),” the IMD said.

“The observations from other AWS and IMD observatory stations at Nagpur reported a maximum temperature in the range of 44-45 degrees C. The corrective action is being taken by IMD,” it added.

Large parts of northern and central India have been in the grip of extreme heatwave conditions for the past few weeks with the mercury crossing 50 degrees in some places. Recently, an automatic weather station at Mungeshpur in northwest Delhi recorded 52.9 degrees Celsius, the highest ever in India, prompting the IMD to examine the automatic weather station in the locality for possible errors in its sensors.
