US President Donald Trump has threatened fresh tariffs on the European Union after Brussels proposed making Canada its first associate member, calling the move a possible ‘hostile act’ as Ottawa looks to deepen ties with Europe.

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has threatened the European Union with ‘very serious tariffs’ and even a possible halt to trade after Brussels proposed making Canada an associate member of the bloc. Calling the idea “laughable”, Trump suggested the move could amount to a “hostile act” against the United States.

“If it’s a good intention, that’s fine. If it’s a bad intention, we’ll put very heavy tariffs on Europe,” Trump told reporters. He also said the US could impose “very serious tariffs or stop trading with Europe on many things”.
