Donald Trump spent weeks promising to obliterate Iran. He posted threats about bombing energy sites into oblivion. He dismissed diplomacy as weakness. Then he paused. Then he reversed. Then he paused again. 

This whiplash tells us everything about the gap between American bluster and American leverage in the Middle East today.

The 47th US president’s latest pivot came after Iranian leaders made their own threats clear. 

Tehran promised to choke the Strait of Hormuz, strike Gulf water desalination plants, and rain missiles on American bases throughout the region. 

Gulf leaders, terrified of seeing their economies collapse and their populations thirsty, pressed Washington to stand down. Trump listened. 

The man who built his brand on never backing down suddenly discovered the virtues of patience.

This pattern keeps repeating, as every time Trump escalates, Iran escalates further, and every time he draws a red line, Iran paints over it. 

The result has been chaos in global energy markets, with ripple effects touching everything from wheat prices in Egypt to gas pumps in Michigan. 

American voters swayed by Trump’s MAGA campaign notice. 

They see a war that looks suspiciously like Israel’s fight, fought with American money and American credibility, producing American headaches.
