“I’m sorry but we’re going to have to switch your boiler off. It’s not safe.”

They’re the words nobody wants to hear, especially in October when the mercury’s starting to drop.

But that’s exactly what happened at the start of this month when a heating engineer came to service our ancient boiler and determined it wasn’t safe to use.

Since then we’ve had various experts out to determine how and where we could install a new boiler, with quotes ranging from A Lot Of Money to Even More Than A Lot.

While we’ve tried to figure out the best course of action, the mornings and evenings have been getting noticeably cooler. So, I dusted off my trusty Duux heater – and to say it’s saved my bacon these past few days would be an understatement.

We first bought the heater when my youngest was born. She’s a winter baby and the weather was particularly harsh following her rapid arrival.

For the first few days of her life we slept downstairs in the living room – then the warmest room in the house – because our bedrooms were a lot cooler. Too cool (in my eyes) for me, let alone a newborn.........
