A Tory MP’s bizarre question about how many gender neutral toilets are in government buildings has been slapped down by a Labour minister.

John Hayes has written to every Whitehall department with the same query.

In the one he sent to foreign secretary Yvette Cooper, Hayes asked “how many single sex and gender neutral bathroom facilities her department provides in its Whitehall premises”.

But he was given short shrift by Foreign Office minister Seema Malhotra, who answered it on Cooper’s behalf.
