Andy Burnham To Unveil Biggest Schools Reform For 15 Years With Move Away From University Route

The PM wants to help the “lost generation” of a million young people unemployed or outside education.

Andy Burnham is set to unveil the largest overhaul in UK education in 15 years by promising to stop prioritising the university route.

The prime minister intends to value “the hard hat as much as the graduation cap” and ensure there are “no dead ends” for young people coming out of the education system with his reforms.

Burnham will tell students today: “Whether you choose construction, coding or classics, you’ll get the skills you need and be given the respect you deserve.”

New technical routes will give 14-year-olds early access to technical skills, work experience and links to local employers.

Pupils in Year 10 will be able to combine core academic subjects with technical education linked to jobs in their area.
