The Devil Wears Prada 2 Director Addresses Trailer Clip That Caused Some Confusion

Meryl Streep's character's behaviour definitely raised some questions.

The Devil Wears Prada’s director has weighed in after one particular aspect of the new sequel’s trailer captured people’s attention.

In The Devil Wears Prada 2, Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly and Anne Hathaway’s Andy Sachs are brought back together after 20 years, when the latter returns to work at Runway magazine as its new features editor.

However, as a new trailer teased back in February, the reunion doesn’t get off to the smoothest of starts, with Miranda struggling to recall ever working with Andy – or other events from the first film – and later expressing her surprise that she also knows Emily, played in both films by Emily Blunt.

This proved to be a major talking point when this trailer was first released, with filmmaker David Frankel having his say during a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Admitting he thinks this is more of a “a little bit of a ploy” on Miranda’s part than a case of her genuinely not remembering her old employee, he suggested: “When you have your first boss – they mean everything to you, you never forget them and the boss has had a million assistants. You came and you were there for a year, who remembers that?”

Screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna agreed: “It’s been 20 years, how many assistants do we think she’s had? She has two [at a time] so probably 50, I would guess. She definitely doesn’t remember [Andy] on sight, which I think is understandable.”

As well as Meryl, Anne and Emily, The Devil Wears Prada will see several other key faces from the first film reprising their roles, perhaps most notably Stanley Tucci as Runway staple Nigel Kipling.

They’ll also be joined by some exciting newcomers, including Sir Kenneth Branagh, Justin Theroux, BJ Novak and Simone Ashley, with Naomi Campbell and Lady Gaga among the A-listers thought to be making cameos in the new movie.

Meanwhile, a host of other stars shot appearances in The Devil Wears Prada 2 that have ultimately ended up on the cutting room floor.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 arrives in cinemas on 1 May.
