With Spirit Airlines on the verge of collapse, the U.S. government is preparing to offer a $500 million lifeline.

The Trump administration is negotiating a deal to save the airline in which Uncle Sam would loan the money in return for a stake in the company, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday. Spirit hasn’t been profitable since 2019, and has twice filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

While the government assisted the airline industry after 9/11 and during the pandemic, taking such a step to save a single carrier would be unprecedented.
