Jenny Riddell-Carpenter, Defra minister and MP for Suffolk Coastal, made the extraordinary remarks at her party's conference in Liverpool earlier this week.

Speaking at a fringe event, she described the idea of "warm ale, a black Labrador by your feet in a pub that doesn't exist" as a "very far-right nostalgic vision of Britain that we don't want to have, [and] never really existed".

She said the prospect of the so-called "far right" shaping the countryside debate at the next general election kept her awake at night.

Ms Riddell-Carpenter’s remarks have prompted anger among the region's countryfolk, with landlords and dog owners alike asking what their pubs and labradors have to do with political extremism.

Tess Wright, who manages the Walpole Arms in Itteringham, north Norfolk, and owns two black Labradors, invited the minister to head up the A140 and see for herself.
