Ian George's grandfather Fredrick Walter Francis Junior ran the Earl of Leicester, at the junction of Dereham Road and Bowthorpe Road, for nearly 40 years - from 1919 to 1946.

But, Mr George, who writes about history in his spare time, has recently discovered how the pub is more deeply rooted in his family heritage.

He said: "A decade before, my great-grandfather, Fredrick Walter Francis Senior, was at the helm.

"He ran the pub for 12 years.

"From 1907 to 1919."
