Grandparents pushed to 'breaking point' as council failed young woman
The Local Government and Social Care ombudsman ruled the council had made a string of mistakes in the way it handled the assessment of the woman's needs and the support she and her grandparents needed.
The council has been ordered to pay the young woman's grandparents £1,500 and the woman herself £500 because of its failings.
What went wrong?
The ombudsman, which investigates complaints about councils, became involved in the case of the young woman, known as Ms D, after a complaint on behalf of her and her grandparents, referred to as Mr and Mrs X.
Ms D, who lived with her grandparents, was known to the council as a child because of complex social care needs arising from hearing loss, behavioural and learning difficulties.
When she reached 18, the council carried out a Care Act assessment, which identified a number of issues, including that Mr X and Mrs X had difficulties supporting her as she could become physically aggressive.
