Bus shelter protest sparks extraordinary row between MP and council leader

Kay Mason Billig, County Hall's Conservative leader, claimed North Norfolk MP Steffan Aquarone, who has been supporting protesters trying to stop plans to knock down the shelter, privately told her the council should pause the project for a while then continue with the demolition.

But Liberal Democrat Mr Aquarone said Mrs Mason Billig's comments, which she made in a Norfolk County Council meeting, were "outright lies".

NCC wants to knock down the 1950s bus shelter, in Station Approach, to replace it with a new 'travel hub' at a cost of £580,000.

But protesters occupied the bus shelter, which is on land owned by Sheringham Town Council, on Monday last week, as demolition was due to begin.
