Go-ahead to refurb listed shop despite objections to security shutters

Fenland council has agreed Savers can replace the frontage of its Grade II listed building on the Market Place at Wisbech.

But conservation group the Wisbech Society said it was not sure why the store needed security shutters, adding: "We object to external shutters as these make a significant impact on the heritage of the building and the street scene."

A planning statement admits the 18th Century property stands in "a particularly important and sensitive area in the centre of Wisbech", surrounded by other listed buildings and in close proximity to Wisbech Castle.

It adds the shutters would "provide both security and protect the lobby from any anti-social activity".

Councillors agreed the plans, despite an officer's report which said the external shutters would have "a negative impact" on the building.
