Let’s recognize gratitude this Thanksgiving

At the heart of every faith and culture lies a foundation of gratitude. In Judaism, the concept of gratitude is known as HaKarat HaTov — literally, “recognizing the good.” This idea teaches us to actively look for the good in our lives, to acknowledge the blessings we receive and to give thanks not just for the grand moments, but also for the small, everyday gifts we often take for granted.

Thanksgiving offers a perfect opportunity to pause, reflect, and practice this principle — especially at a time when it can be difficult to see beyond the divisions that surround us.

Gratitude is a powerful force. It shifts our focus from what we lack to what we have, from our frustrations to our blessings. This shift has profound psychological and social impacts. By recognizing the good in one another — even in those with whom we may disagree — we cultivate a culture of respect, kindness and connection. This is not just a personal practice, but a communal one that strengthens relationships and helps build a more harmonious society.

HaKarat HaTov is woven into Jewish daily life, starting with the first words we say upon waking up. The first prayer we recite immediately upon opening our eyes, expresses thanks for the simple gift of another........
