What Zohran Mamdani Has Done Since Becoming Mayor

Zohran Mamdani was sworn in on Thursday, and after his big inaugural ceremony at City Hall, the new mayor quickly got to work. Here, a look at what he’s been up to since.

Not long after taking office, Mamdani signed his first pair of executive orders. Among them was a directive to revoke all of the executive orders issued on or after September 26, 2024, by his predecessor, Eric Adams. The date was notably when the Justice Department unveiled its indictment of Adams, alleging years of corruption and the exchange of luxury-travel perks for political favors for foreign nationals. While Adams had long denied the charges, the indictment loomed over the then-mayor’s reelection bid. The case was later dismissed at the direction of the Trump administration, sparking speculation of a deal between Adams and the president, something both sides have denied.

When asked about that specific date on Thursday, Mamdani signaled that it was about sending a message about the kind of politics his administration will embody moving forward.

“We speak about this day as a new era. And in order for us to fulfill the hope that that language engenders, we have to reckon with why so many New Yorkers have turned away from politics over the last few months, the last few years, the last few decades. And that was a date that marked a moment when many New Yorkers decided that politics held nothing for them but more of the same,” Mamdani said.

The executive orders include allowing federal law-enforcement agencies, such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement, to create office space on Rikers Island and investigate criminal activity in the jail complex as well as a directive to create an Office of Digital Assets and Blockchain Technology, intended to promote investment in the cryptocurrency industry.
