Anti-Abortion Groups Try to Get New Restrictions Past Trump

The anti-abortion movement will be eternally grateful to Donald Trump for shaping the Supreme Court that reversed Roe v. Wade and allowed a host of red states to ban or restrict abortion services. But he also put what they really wanted, a national abortion ban, off the table for 2024 and 2025, arguing (correctly) that it was an extremely unpopular proposition. So with the legislative avenue closed, anti-abortion activists have been pursuing backdoor regulatory measures to advance their cause, focusing mainly on restricting the distribution of abortion pills.

But once again, the Trump administration’s political pragmatism (or cynicism, depending on how you look at it) is getting in the way. Anti-abortion groups have been arguing for some time that the Federal Drug Administration should restrict the abortion drug mifepristone on safety grounds, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and FDA commissioner Marty Makary promised a review of the issue. But guess what? They’ll be working on it until after the midterm elections, as Bloomberg reports:
