Nelson: Canada can't afford seniors pension hike
Will we baby boomers suck up every dime from this country’s coffers before shuffling off our mortal coils? Or are we finally going to say enough is enough and let’s give young people a chance instead?
It is up to us to step forward, because the politicians certainly won’t. There are far too many boomers who habitually vote that nobody holding office would dare take us on.
But in our hearts, we must know that Canada is more than some all-you-can-eat financial buffet, where “give us more” reverberates across the nation as a sad group chant.
The latest tasty dish we’re tempted with comes courtesy of the Bloc Quebecois, which, in itself, should give us pause. Anyhow, the Bloc wants the federal government to hike Old Age Security payments by 10 per cent for seniors between the ages of 65 and 74. (Those 75 and older received such an increase not long ago.)
The Tories and NDP have so far backed the hike, one that’ll cost taxpayers more than $3 billion a year,........
