Spooky silence of Bangladesh media centering Muhammad Yunus

For the last several years, the case against Nobel laureate Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, who is accused of pushing lives of millions of poor women into extreme poverty – has attracted sizable attention both nationally and internationally. However, a peculiar and somewhat unsettling phenomenon has emerged: the notable silence and apparent appeasement by local media in countering lies of Yunus and exposing his actual activities which he has been continuing for decades under the garb of the “savior of poor”. On the other hand, those same media – irrespective of their editorial policies or political affiliations have bee extensively covering recent cases of high-profile corruption in Bangladesh, raising question about their impartiality, integrity and agenda.

Professor Yunus, a revered figure due to his Nobel Peace Prize in microfinance and social entrepreneurship, has long enjoyed positive media coverage. However, this has reached a point where the local media seems to tread carefully around him, often refraining from critical analysis or extensive reporting on his ongoing legal battle. According to the latest court report, Yunus and 13 others have sought discharge from a graft case, yet this significant development has been met with muted responses from local media outlets.
