“We have to have a Liberal Party that respects modern Australia," Sussan Ley said in her first press conference after becoming the Liberal leader.

“Australians have chosen to face global challenges the Australian way," Anthony Albanese said in his victory speech.

Opposition leader Peter Dutton is keen to avoid any comparisons to Trump, who he had previously described as a “big thinker” on policy.

“We have to recognize that we live in a different world,” Australian foreign minister Penny Wong said on Wednesday.
