Editorial: Rising above the fear

If you’re unusually nervous, jittery, tense, spooked, afraid, terrified or just simply exhausted at the thought of this election, here’s a possibly comforting thought: You’re not alone.

And the anxiety is — to use a word you don’t hear very often these days — bipartisan.

Your worries also aren’t without some basis in reality. Political violence is, in fact, happening around the country already, before the votes are even counted.

We have already seen an attempted assassination of Donald J. Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, and one foiled near-attempt. More recently, ballot drop-off boxes were set on fire this past Monday in Vancouver, Washington, and Portland, Oregon, following an earlier incident Oct. 8 that also occurred in Portland. While a fire suppression system worked well in the latest Portland incident, hundreds of ballots were destroyed in the Vancouver fire. Authorities are trying to ensure that people whose ballots were lost are still able to cast votes.
