Churchill: Where, oh where, is the David Soares campaign?

Albany County District Attorney David Soares announced his write-in campaign on July 17. Chris Churchill says there has been little evidence there is a campaign to back up the July announcement.

David Soares, the Albany County district attorney, in July announced he would run an independent write-in campaign spotlighting New York's criminal justice reforms.

Two months later, there's little evidence he's vigorously running.

Soares' Facebook page, for example, was entirely dormant until I started asking about the campaign's lack of energy. The only update since July, posted Wednesday morning, declared that "the momentum for my campaign continues to build because of your support" — a statement worthy of skepticism.

Where are the rallies and the press releases and the lawn signs and the TV ads? Where's the action? Where oh where is the campaign?

Depending on your level of interest in local politics, you may or may not remember that Soares was headed to an easy, unopposed reelection when the public learned he'd given himself a $23,000 bonus from state grant money awarded mostly for staff retention. Leaving legality and ethicality aside, the move proved politically calamitous.

Suddenly, Soares found himself with a Democratic........
