Churchill: Ugly antisemitism confronts the perfect Harris pick

In nearly every respect, Pennsylvania's Josh Shapiro is the perfect running mate for Kamala Harris.
First and foremost, Shapiro is the popular governor of a state Harris badly needs to win in November. Shapiro is also a moderate with a reputation for getting things done. He delivers a pretty good speech. Unlike J.D. Vance, he's qualified to be president.
But, as you may have heard, Shapiro is Jewish.

In any sane world, the particularities of a candidate's religion wouldn't matter, and, actually, I don't think most voters care.
If anything, many might be pleased that Shapiro, an observant Jew who keeps kosher and observes the Shabbat, is religious at all — another reason he might add a few independent voters to Harris' side.
But for some on the progressive left, Shapiro's support for Israel is a problem, so much so that there's an ongoing campaign to keep "Genocide Josh" from being Harris' choice. Some argue that, as one magazine put it, Shapiro is "the one choice who could ruin Democratic unity," while........
