Tamil Nadu: Governor Overreach in Focus as Vijay Attempts to Form Government

New Delhi: Concerns of governor overreach as Tamil Nadu assembly election victor C. Joseph Vijay attempts to form the government in the state remain as the Tamil Vetri Kazhagam chief has been asked to bring the signatures of 118 MLAs.
It was reported a day ago that Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar had asked Vijay to produce letters demonstrating support of 118 MLAs, the majority mark in the 234-member assembly. Arlekar, who has been the governor of Kerala since January 2025 took additional charge of Tamil Nadu on March 12, 2026.
The TVK has won 108 seats in the assembly polls. Vijay has contested from two seats – Trichy East and Perambur – and won from both. He has to therefore resign from one. Another party MLA will need to be elected Speaker.
