RITTNER: Batestown and the Fair, Part 2

In 1848 the Agricultural Society leased five acres for seven years and erected buildings and fences in Batestown beginning on the north side of present Glen Avenue extending East past 7th Avenue to the railroad tracks.

The Troy paper described it:

“These buildings are in the form of a hollow square (affording at all times adequate security to property placed in them) and consist of several permanent erections, viz: one building 25 feet posts-150 feet ling and 50 feet wide, with wings upon each side (13 ½ feet wide each) extending the whole length of the main building, — also a two story fire proof brick building, 34 x 54 feet covered with slate, and extensive sheds sufficient for the accommodation of all cattle and horses, which may be exhibited, to protect them from then in clemencies of the weather, and where they may remain without removal during night in as great security, as in any stable.

“A never failing spring of pure water, is conducted to the grounds and buildings, by means of a lead pope 1 ¼ inch bore laid under ground, and large reservoirs constructed to contain the water, affording a large supply beyond any which may be needed for all purposes on........
