NY kids deserve safe schools. The Legislature must act
Now is the time for New Yorkers to rally around important school safety legislation on the floor of the New York State Assembly and Senate. Proposed by Assemblyperson Amy Paulin and State Senator Shelley Mayer, the law is known as A.5258a in the Assembly and as S.5117a in the state Senate.
Before reviewing the details of this life saving proposal, let’s place it in the context of lessons from the Uvalde Shooting and New York’s limited progress on safety.
New York State’s Board of Regents recently approved new school safety regulations that represent both a step forward in school safety, and a missed opportunity to learn from Uvalde. The Regents’ new rules, contained in Section 155.17 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education Relating to School Safety Plan Requirements, largely clarify existing language and this is useful.
