A trip to Boston to visit Daughter No. 2 often includes a stop at Market Basket, a Tewksbury, Mass.-based regional supermarket chain with 90 stores in four New England states.

That was the case last month, as daughter labored to deliver our first grandchild, and Husband and I combed the aisles at the store near her house to gather makings for meals that would keep her and Son-in-Law fed during the early days with a new baby.

Like many grocery chains, including the Capital Region’s Price Chopper/Market 32 and Hannaford, Market Basket has deep family roots dating back to the last century.

For Market Basket, it’s the Demoulas family, starting with a husband and wife who immigrated from Greece and after a time opened a small food store that their two sons eventually took over........
