Reconsider support for Aid in Dying Act
I am deeply saddened and troubled by Gov. Kathy Hochul’s recent decision to sign legislation legalizing medically assisted suicide for the terminally ill.
As a follower of Christ and a pastor, I cannot accept the idea that it is merciful or compassionate to hasten death.
All life is sacred and meaningful. The beginning and end of life belong to God’s wisdom and mercy.
True compassion is shown not by administering lethal drugs, but by offering loving care, sound medicine, and both material and spiritual support.
In times of suffering and death, our duty is to provide hope and comfort. Families and faith communities are vital in creating this environment, and I can personally attest to the devotion of doctors, nurses, and other health care workers in hospice care. These professionals are experts, indeed, angels, who walk alongside families and the terminally ill, helping them face suffering and death with dignity.
Our state government should be expanding hospice services, not legalizing and thereby normalizing suicide. The message of this law is chilling: your life is no longer important, and the sooner you leave, the sooner the rest of us can move on. Where is the love........
