Together with spring flowers like violets, daffodils, forsythias, magnolias and hyacinths, dandelions are in full bloom in their humble manners on the lowly ground. Leaves appear first before the yellow dandelion flowers are in bloom.

This year, I harvested dandelion leaves growing in the backyard lawn to make salad. While some people may not enjoy their bitter taste, it's worth noting that dandelions are a nutritious medicinal herb.

The marvelous energy and vitality of spring coax plants to break through the hardened soil. Among all the components that contribute to their sprouting and growth, sunlight stands out as the most outstanding and essential growth factor.

Walking around under the sunlight invigorates every being, imparting a sense of liveliness, freedom, and cheerfulness. Basking in the sunlight while taking a walk brings immense joy, as it rejuvenates the body, mind, and soul, leaving one feeling strong, positive, and peaceful.

The natural power of sunlight exerts similar effects on both plants and human beings. For every living being, basking in the sun is essential to sustain life.

Staying in the shade or the shelter can be safe and comfortable. Especially during summer rains, seeking shelter protects us from the windy storm, providing a sense of comfort and coziness. However, it can also induce feelings of weakness and passivity, encouraging us to move less actively.

Evergreen trees and grass can somehow retain their greenery during winter, but most deciduous trees shed their leaves. When the weather turns cold and windy, allowing the fallen leaves to remain on the ground serves to protect the grass from the chilly conditions, as they act as a natural insulator, helping to keep it warm.

While raking the fallen leaves on the lawn, I observed that areas of grass heavily piled up on the leaves had become pale and weak. Unlike other parts of the grass that were exposed to sunlight, those areas grew thin and pale, lacking natural vitality. Despite being protected from the bitter cold, it appeared that they lost inner vitality that can only be cultivated through endurance and perseverance.

Grass that has endured and survived the cold winter under the sunlight as well as the windy or rainy days retains its greenness and vital freshness.

The same can be said for our lives.

Facing and accepting the various facets of human relationships is a sure path to personal growth and the deepening of our prayer life. Engaging in intimate communion with the Lord through prayer is akin to basking constantly under the sunlight of divine presence and guidance.

Remaining in the presence of God means being under the sunlight. Susanna exemplifies remaining in the sunlight even amidst challenging circumstances. When the two wicked old men falsely accused her and laid their hands on her head, Susanna wept. However, as a woman of beauty and faith, she chose not to confront them directly or argue against their false witness. Instead, she lifted her gaze to heaven and spoke to God with unwavering trust, as follows:

“Eternal God, you know what is hidden and are aware of all things before they come to be: you know that they have testified falsely against me. Here I am about to die, though I have done none of the things for which these men have condemned me.” (Daniel 13:42-43)

God heard her prayer and stirred up the Holy Spirit in a young boy named Daniel. Truly, those in communion with God are touched, healed, inspired and moved by the spirit.
