The stakes in America today

Donald Trump’s conviction last week on 34 felony counts is stunning. It also indicates that no one is above the law in the United States. As the country awaits news of Trump’s sentencing, Trump already pretends to incite action should he see jail time. Some legal experts predict probation. It’s in the judge’s hands it seems.

American democracy is a grand experiment, and no experiment guarantees success. Its “trials” are many, and its successes have outbalanced its failures. Many challenges and injustices condition the life of democracies on earth, including the United States. It’s too soon to know how history will write about this era of Trumpian infatuation. On the one side, many people swear by, go to jail for and treat Trump as a kind of cult hero. On the other, liberals tend to view him as among the most unjust leaders and pretenders to autocracy in American history. Trump seems happy to carry on our country’s love-hate affair. It appears he’s leading in many polls at this point, after the conviction, in the race for the presidency in November.
