Florida Republican introduces bill renaming Palm Beach airport for Trump

Rep. Brian Mast (R-Fla.) introduced legislation on Tuesday to rename Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) as “Donald J. Trump International Airport,” just after a month after Republicans in the Florida Legislature voted to do so.

Mast, who represents the Sunshine State’s 21st Congressional District, introduced H.R.8054 in the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee — chaired by Rep. Sam Graves (R-Mo.).

Florida GOP Reps. Anna Paulina Luna and Daniel Webster, the latter of whom is on the Transportation and Infrastructure panel, have co-sponsored the legislation. The full text of the bill is not yet available on congress.gov.

Last month, Republicans in the Florida House and Senate passed legislation renaming PBI after Trump via votes of 81-30 and 25-11, respectively.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is yet to sign the legislation, while the name change is also subject to approval by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The name change, if signed into law by DeSantis and greenlit by the FAA, would take effect on July 1, according to the bill.

PBI is roughly four miles from the president’s Mar-a-Lago club. Trump, a lifelong New Yorker, changed his residency to Florida during his first term.

Since the president returned to office, he and his administration have moved to add his name to a slew of buildings and programs, including the Kennedy Center, the U.S. Institute of Peace, the TrumpRx prescription drug platform and “Trump Accounts,” investment accounts that parents can open for their children starting this tax season. 

The Trump Organization, which is run by the president’s sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, last month also filed to trademark the use of the elder Trump’s name on airports.
