Kelly warns about potential second Trump term
Former Trump White House chief of staff John Kelly is making dark accusations about his former boss, saying Trump has “fascist” tendencies and once praised Nazi generals for their loyalty to Adolf Hitler.
“He’s certainly an authoritarian, admires people who are dictators — he has said that. So he certainly falls into the general definition of fascist, for sure,” Kelly told The New York Times.
Kelly has made similar claims before, telling CNN's Jim Sciutto earlier this year that Trump once declared that "Hitler did some good things" and the German leader "rebuilt the economy."
The former chief of staff made new waves this week after telling The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg that Trump had raised the subject of "Hitler's generals," with two sources telling the journalist that Trump once remarked that he needed "the kind of generals that Hitler had."
The Trump campaign denies those claims. “This is absolutely false. President Trump never said this,” Trump campaign adviser Alex Pfeiffer said in a statement.
Vice President Harris gave unscheduled remarks Wednesday to highlight the claims.
“Donald Trump is increasingly unhinged and unstable and in a second term, people like John Kelly would not be there to be the guardrails against his propensities and his actions. The bottom line is this, we know what Donald Trump wants. He wants unchecked power. The question in 13 days will be, what do the American people want?”
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was also asked to weigh in.
“To be praising Adolf Hitler is dangerous and disgusting,” she said.
When asked if President Biden thinks Trump is a fascist, as Kelly has stated, Jean-Pierre responded "yes."
Kelly has criticized Trump before, including last year when he said a story of the former commander in chief calling fallen troops "suckers" and "losers" was true. Trump has long denied that story.
Republicans say the years-old allegations are politically-motivated, coming less than two weeks before the election.
